My knitting designs begin with the intersection of three factors: a yarn I want to knit with, a stitch pattern that is appealing to look at and entertaining to knit, and an item I want to add to my wardrobe. For this shawl the textured stitch pattern caught my interest first, along with the idea of colors alternating in two-row stripes; then came the shape of the shawl, relatively shallow with longer tails for wrapping or tying; and finally the gloriously bouncy Chickadee yarn.

Often when I start to work on a design I run into a surprise, a problem or unexpected discovery. This time it was finding out that I much preferred what I'd originally thought would be the wrong side of the two-color pattern: sadly, that meant ripping back a bit on the prototype, but the result was definitely worth it. Something as simple as garter and rib, combined with two-color stripes, turns out to look unexpectedly complex.
